Top three tips for University:

  1. I know everyone always says it, but get stuck in every opportunity you can (without overloading yourself!). There are so many societies/extra-curricular activities you can be part of, and if this isn’t your thing, there’s always support from the university to start something you love yourself
  2. Put yourself out there and meet and network with new people! This is especially important in first-year, but even in the other years, it's always good to make new friends or chat with a guest speaker that’s come in (LinkedIn is great for this!). It’s also good to make strong connections with your lecturers - they’re always willing to help!
  3. Try to have some sort of structure to your day (although make sure to have some days off!) It’s very easy to get behind/overwhelmed when work piles up, so write a list, make a timetable – whatever works for you – to help you keep on top of work as well and have breaks and nights out.

How did you research the options open to you for University?

Aside from using websites such as UCAS and the university rankings, I also spent time looking and comparing the various marketing courses available and finding the one which I thought best fit what I was looking for.

Student reviews are also really helpful for getting a better perspective on the university as a whole.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Liverpool Management School?

From the research I had done, as well as attending open days, it was clear that the Management School had an impressive number of connections, and accreditations and that there would always be lots of opportunities for me to get involved.

The reviews I had looked at, as well as league tables, also supported this. The feel of the city was also a very important factor in my decision, and from my very first visit, I knew it was somewhere I’d be very happy living.

Why did you choose your course?

Having initially wanted to do fashion at university, I made a very spontaneous decision to change my application to Marketing after accidentally sitting in a marketing talk during a university open day.

As my A-levels included art and textiles, I feel as though I was almost pushed down the route of doing a fashion degree or something similar.

However, I quickly realised that I was actually more interested in the marketing of these products as opposed to the making of them.

After researching more into what a marketing degree entailed, I knew that I would still be able to express my creativity whilst learning and researching theories and writing essays, something that I knew I would miss if I was to do a solely practical degree.

The option for a year in industry was also an important factor, as I knew I wanted to gain real-world experience where I could outwork everything I was learning, as well as have some extra experience for when I graduate.

What skills have you developed?

My degree has helped me gain so many new skills, particularly in my first year which not only includes marketing but also management, accounting and economics.

The regular group-work assessments really help to develop teamwork and leadership skills, as well as time management, critical thinking and communication coming from various other coursework and general experiences.

How have you handled any of the challenges of University?

The support offered by the staff at the university is something that I always use. The Marketing Director of Studies, along with my academic adviser and various other staff, are always happy to help with any questions you may have and will support you as much as possible.

Other challenges I’ve experienced such as time management can also be helped by writing to-do lists and setting certain times in the day for you to get your work done.

How have you found the learning experience?

Throughout my time here, the lectures and seminars have been engaging and the staff are always there to provide as much support as needed.

The modules on my course are fantastic, especially in the second year as we’ve started to really focus on the marketing discipline and go into more detail.

There’s always such a good range of opportunities provided, being able to gain practical experience as well as learning and linking theories.

What are your future career goals?

I’m not 100% sure what job I want to have, but digital marketing and consumer behaviour are something I’m very interested in! I’m hoping to find a placement role within social media marketing to explore this further. I also hope to have my own business, or expand my current one!

What clubs and societies are you involved in?

I am part of the marketing society and also campus netball, having the opportunity to meet a lovely group of people and take part in many different social events. I’ve also just signed up to become a Social Media Advocate for the Management School, so there really is something for everyone!

What have you enjoyed about living in Liverpool?

As location and the feel of a city was so important for me when looking around universities, I knew from my first time here that I’d love it!

Liverpool is such a vibrant, diverse city, with live music, shops on your doorstep and the docks all being things that I love!

The fact you still get the ‘city feel’ but can have everything within walking distance or just a short bus ride away is great.

What have you enjoyed most about your student experience?

There are so many things I’ve loved since I first came here but I’d have to say meeting so many new people and making such close friends has been a really big highlight for me.

Starting my own business alongside uni has also been a very big step, getting so much support from the school and the Marketing Director of Studies.
