Brett Centre for Entrepreneurship holds first workshop in collaboration with the Economic and Social Research Council

The Brett Centre for Entrepreneurship held its first Workshop - Entrepreneurship for Social Scientist Researchers, in collaboration with the ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council : Impact Accelerator Account on 28th February.
The workshop, attended by academics and support departments from University of Liverpool discussed the meaning of commercialisation, its relevance, challenges, and benefits for social scientist researchers.

On Thursday, 22nd February 2024, the workshop 'Learning to fly: Entrepreneurship Research as a Living Process of Inquiry' took place, organised and led by Dr David Higgins from the University of Liverpool Management School and hosted by The University of Liverpool Management School’s Brett Centre for Entrepreneurship. This innovative event was supported by the European Council of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ECSB) event fund, and the British Academy of Management (BAM) Research Methods and Entrepreneurship Special Interest Groups.

Final Entrepreneurs Monthly Meet-up of the year held at Yamama Café & Bar
12 January 2024
The final Entrepreneurs Monthly Meet-up of the year took place on Thursday 14th December and was organised by Richard Leighton from the Brett Centre for Entrepreneurship at the Yamama Cafe & Bar on Parliament Street in the Baltic Triangle.
Hosts for the evening, Futoon Qusairy and Noura Qusairy, of Yamama, are sisters originally from Jordan and set-up Yamama (the Arabic word for a dove found in the region, which represents love, freedom and peace) as an artistic business that supports refugees in Liverpool and provides a creative outlet for them.
Professor Robert Blackburn Awarded Fellow of ISBE

Professor Robert Blackburn was awarded Fellow of Institute of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE) at their Annual Conference, held on 9th November at Aston University.
The ISBE’s appointment is in recognition of Professor Blackburn’s significant contribution to the Institute and his outstanding record of past achievements.
Latest Entrepreneurs Monthly Meet-Up gathers nearly 100 students

The first Entrepreneurs Monthly Meet-up (EMM) of 2023-24, hosted by the (BCfE) in partnership with Yellow Jumper, was successfully attended by nearly 100 students.
The event, which took place on 19 October at Selina Liverpool, is one the most highly attended since the start of the project in May 2022, demonstrating the value it brings to students interested in pursuing a career in entrepreneurship.
Two-in-five self-employed would switch to salaried job as incomes stagnate, survey reveals

‘The self-employment trap’, published today by the Centre for Economic Performance (CEP), indicates around two-in-five self-employed workers would switch to a salaried job if they could secure the same income, with around one-in-eight willing to accept a 20% pay cut to get out.
The study, co-authored by the Brett Centre for Entrepreneurship, comes after previous research showed an exodus from self-employment, as incomes failed to recover after the pandemic.
Brett Centre for Entrepreneurship hosts final Seminar Series of this academic year

The Brett Centre for Entrepreneurship held its third seminar on Wednesday 12 July as part of their Seminar Series: "Contextualizing Entrepreneurship – Taking stock, exploring new directions".
The keynote speaker for the event was Professor Friederike Welter from the Institut für Mittelstandsforschung, Bonn and University of Siegen, School of Economic Disciplines.
Brett Centre for Entrepreneurship participates in University of Liverpool Widening Participation initiative

The University of Liverpool’s Widening Participation and Outreach (WPO) department ran its annual two-day immersive summer experience in June for the Widening Participation students it engages with across the year.
The WPO team brings local secondary school students ages 16-18 onto campus to participate in a range of academic sessions, in different Faculties, in addition to stopping in one of the university’s Halls of Residence to give them an insight into life at the University of Liverpool.
Brett Centre for Entrepreneurship runs start-up school for students/graduates across Liverpool City Region

Following the successful launch of The Brett Centre for Entrepreneurship’s Start-up School in April for 16-19-year-olds in local schools and colleges across Liverpool, the Centre ran its second in-person school in June.
The June edition of the 3-day programme focused on supporting students and graduates 19+ across the Liverpool City Region connected with the Entrepreneurs Monthly Meet-up with 6 colleges and universities across Merseyside.
Brett Centre for Entrepreneurship runs workshop on developing entrepreneurship research with impact

The Brett Centre for Entrepreneurship, with support from the Society for the Advancement of Management Studies, held its first in-person two-day workshop on Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 June.
The successful event explored engaging scholarship and impact by bringing together senior academics, policy researchers and practising entrepreneurs to work collaboratively with Early Career Researchers and PhD students.

The eighth event was tech-focused and ran in collaboration with Startup Grind Liverpool which is a community of founders, programmers, operators and investors committed to supporting each other.
Brett Centre for Entrepreneurship runs seventh Monthly Meet-Up for this academic year

The seventh Monthly Meet-Up took place at the Plaza on Old Hall Street and was run in collaboration with LCR Finance Hub and River Capital, which are both parts of Merseyside Special Investment Fund.
The Meet-Up was focused on finance, and over 60 attendees heard from LCR Finance Hub about the support available to help individuals financially plan and gain access to funding to start up.

The Brett Centre for Entrepreneurship Start-up School is a free 3-day programme for 16-19 years olds based in the Liverpool City Region.
Richard Leighton, Entrepreneur in Residence, and Dr Zeineb Djebali, Senior Lecturer in the Brett Centre for Entrepreneurship, delivered and facilitated the sessions across the three days with the help of six entrepreneurs.

Guest speaker Rudy Parengal talked about setting up and developing his successful food-tech business, Abjak, which is a platform that runs cloud kitchens in Liverpool to partner with and incubate online food businesses like The South Indian.

Flight from self-employment as UK cost of living crisis continues

With over 40 students and graduates in attendance, the January Monthly Meet-Up was held in Liverpool Science Park.
The event focused on manufacturing and tech, with a jam-packed lineup of speakers, including Bea Howarth and Abbie Romano (Manufacturing Technology Centre), Andy Kent, (CEO of Angel Solutions), plus Lotte Manson and Matthew Nightingale (Land Coffee).
