Rafid Al-Yasiri

Liverpool MBA, 2016

Before embarking on an MBA, I had been working for UNICEF Iraq as water, sanitation and hygiene officer. I chose to study an MBA at Liverpool as I needed to expand my knowledge in business management which in turn, has allowed me to acquire higher position at the company I work for.

How did you fit MBA study into your life?

The MBA has changed both my personal and professional life. At a personal level, I can effectively manage my time, set goals and priorities in an efficient manner. On the other hand, at a professional level, I am able to look at things more critically. The MBA has enabled me to think more strategically and equipped me with the knowledge to effectively manage limited resources to deliver high quality results. Moreover, it has increased my capacity to build and lead efficient teams that are able to add value to a project.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Liverpool Management School ahead of other Universities?

The excellent reputation and AACSB accreditation was the driver for my choice to study at the Management School. Also the friendly environment and the historical heritage of the city was an important reason behind my choice.

What did you like in particular about the Management School and Liverpool in general?

The exposure to business through the guest speaker series was an amazing experience that really shifted me my views and understanding of business. Studying in the Management School really revealed my hidden potential. I have been to different countries with different cultures, however, living in Liverpool was something different. The city is so welcoming with high cultural diversity and very friendly people.

What do you feel has been the most rewarding element of the course?

The whole experience from the diverse cultures of the student body, along with the knowledge from teaching staff was the most rewarding element of the course. The support I have received from the careers advisor was extremely rewarding too.

What skills do you feel you have learnt whilst studying your MBA? How do you think they will help you in your career?

Critical thinking, strategic vision and time management are amongst the most important skills that I have gained. It already helped me to acquire a higher position in my organisation.
