Albetinah Tshegofatso Joseph: BSc Finance and Data Analytics

Originally from Botswana, Albetinah has embraced every opportunity available at Liverpool, from extracurricular activities and leadership roles to a Year in Industry placement with Bupa. Through these experiences, she has developed the confidence, curiosity and professional skills needed for a future career in finance.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Liverpool Management School?

I am originally from the Republic of Botswana and always knew I wanted to pursue my studies abroad. My selection was primarily based on my desire to study Finance and Data Analytics, learning about the programme led me to discover additional motivations for choosing the University of Liverpool.

The institution's overall reputation and ranking as a university were significant factors. Additionally, what further solidified my choice was hearing positive feedback from other students during information sessions, like virtual open days, where I could ask them about their personal experiences.

Also, the state-of-the-art facilities and various resources and databases, like the Bloomberg Trading Floor, that were available were appealing.

Why did you want to study Finance and Data Analytics?

During my school years, I studied economics and accounting, which led me to want to pursue a career in the financial services industry. When applying to university, I knew I wanted a finance-related degree with good career prospects.

Where did you go for your Year in Industry placement?

I am currently on my Year in Industry with Bupa on a Finance and Governance placement, where I am gaining valuable experience across business operations and governance.

What skills have you developed?

During my time at university, one of the greatest skills I have learned is the importance of being my own biggest supporter and cheerleader, particularly regarding my career aspirations.

This is not to say that you should not have a wider support system, but it emphasises that the support system should start internally, with you as your greatest champion.

Networking is a crucial part of navigating the professional world, and I have learned the importance of not only having a personal brand but also being able to express and showcase this brand, ultimately advocating for oneself.

Being able to advocate for yourself allows you to seize growth opportunities and can open doors that help you achieve your goals.

Another skill I have developed is the need for continuous curiosity. As a student in a new environment, I have had the perfect opportunity to try out a variety of extracurricular activities offered at the university.

This has nurtured my curiosity, encouraging me to think beyond what I know and what has been presented to me.

This curiosity extends beyond academics into my professional pursuits, such as networking with industry professionals, improving my social, technological, and global awareness, and nurturing my creative hobbies.

This is a key and essential skill that many employers look for in prospective and future employees. So, be willing to learn and put yourself out there.

What support and extra opportunities have you accessed to help you with your studies?

There is a variety of resources, support, and opportunities available to students. I attended ULMS Extra sessions and other extracurricular activities, allowing me to engage in numerous enriching experiences, including sessions on personal branding, Q&A sessions with industry professionals, and opportunities to serve as a course representative.

Within the course itself, platforms like Canva and organised learning materials, along with videos for each module, provided substantial support.

The assistance from module leaders and the overall faculty in addressing any questions or concerns has been comforting, demonstrating the inclusiveness and wealth of resources provided.

My advice is to make the most of these resources, responsibly of course, and be proactive in seeking clarity and assistance from module leaders when needed.

What have you enjoyed most about your student experience?

I have adored how being in this environment has allowed me to grow into the person slowly, but surely, I wish to be, the best and ever-evolving version of myself.

I have been able to pursue a variety of extracurricular activities that I always wanted to try, such as roller skating, being part of various societies like the Fashion Society, the Afro-Caribbean Society, and the Investment Society, as well as serving as a course representative.

As a result of putting myself out there, I have met some incredible people and made good friends. Remember to be kind to yourself because you are human after all, but don't limit yourself in what you can do.

If something interests you or there is a particular sport or extracurricular activity you have wanted to try, go for it!

What have you enjoyed most about living as a student in Liverpool?

How connected and accessible the city is, particularly in relation to the University's proximity to the city centre. This accessibility has allowed me to try new experiences, especially the variety of food and dining options available on the likes of Bold Street.

As someone who has an appreciation for fashion, I have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the unique stores around Liverpool, such as the Red Brick Marketplace.

Being exposed to different ways in which people express their personalities through style has been wonderful, and engaging with the Liverpool fashion scene has been an amazing experience so far. Overall, the interconnectedness of everything has made me feel free to explore a wide range of activities.

What are your future career goals?

Although my plans are not set in stone, I would like to pursue a career in the finance industry, potentially in risk management, and further my studies by pursuing a master’s .

I am also interested in becoming a certified Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) in the future. My main aim is to stay committed to completing my studies and seizing all opportunities of interest that come my way.
