Welcome to BA International Management

Information for students starting study in September 2025

Hello,

I’ll be your Director of Studies for BA International Management and BA International Management with a Year in Industry. I look forward to meeting you all and to sharing your University journey with you. In the meantime, I would encourage you to attend as many of the Welcome Week and Foundation Activities as possible as they will be very useful. Make sure you keep checking these pages for updates to your timetable.

Our teaching staff are from a wide range of backgrounds and nationalities, bringing knowledge and expertise from across the globe and meaning that you will receive a truly international experience during your time with us which will equip you to navigate an outward-facing world.

My final words of advice to you, before you begin your journey with us are:

• Be open-minded and bring a thirst for knowledge- we look forward to you joining our community
• Remember, there is a team of academic and professional services staff to support you - just ask if you need help

Recommended reading

A great way you can start to prepare is to develop a mindset about the challenges and opportunities that companies face when they internationalise, as well as impacts from international competition. You could do that by reading the Financial Times, the Economist and similar newspapers and websites.

Thinking about issues explored in news articles and and on the websites mentioned will help you to tune in with the content of the International Management programme. Further to this, if you are thinking of specific books that could widen your thinking and challenge your way of seeing and understanding the world, I would also recommend the following:

• Why nations fail: the origins of power, prosperity and poverty. By Acemoglu, D. and Robinson, J. - this is more about understanding institutional differences between countries.
• The new Climate war: the fight to take back our planet. By Michael Mann
• The silk roads: A new history of the world by Frankopan, P.

Looking to learn a new language?

All students have the opportunity to learn a language (Basque, Catalan, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish), either as part of their degree programme or as an extra-curricular activity. Learning a new language offers you insight, not only into the language but the rich history and culture of the country(ies) where the language is spoken.

Advice from recent graduate, Megan Turnock, (2020- 2023)

Top three tips for University:

1. Be prepared and identify what you need to do each week in order to keep on top of your workload. It can be difficult to get back on track once you start to fall behind. The Management School has its own support office which you can visit or contact online should you need additional assistance
2. Try something new, this is the perfect opportunity and there's so much to get involved in! There is a vast array of clubs, societies and extracurricular activities such as ULMS Extra, providing plenty of options
3. Enjoy it, and do what makes you happy. The workload may seem a lot sometimes so it is important to make time to do things you enjoy outside of your course.
