The Centre for Sports Business was delighted to welcome Dr David Winkelmann for a guest research seminar at the University of Liverpool Management School.

Dr Winkelmann, who is part of the University of Bielefeld's Management Accounting and Operations Management department, delivered his seminar on quantifying uncertainty in football to Centre colleagues.

The seminar focused on two studies, the first of which analysed data relating to the heart rate and stress levels of over 200 Arminia Bielefeld supporters during and around their team's first ever appearance in the German Cup Final in May 2025.

The second looked at simulations of match outcomes in the UEFA Champions League, offering insights for strategic decision-making by clubs still adjusting to the introduction of the competition's new format in 2024.

Dr Winkelmann had travelled to Liverpool after being in Manchester a day earlier to watch his beloved Borussia Dortmund play Manchester City, and was welcomed to the Management School by Professor Ian McHale.

"We are very pleased to be able to have David here as our guest today," said Ian. "It was a great talk as evident by the amount of discussion it generated between colleagues at the Centre."
