MBA students stepped out of the lecture theatre and into one of the city’s most iconic pieces of infrastructure, taking part in a guided tour of the Mersey Tunnels.
Ranked among the city’s top visitor experiences, the tour offered a unique behind-the-scenes look at how the tunnels are managed, maintained and kept running year-round. Connecting Liverpool to the Wirral, the Queensway and Kingsway tunnels are a critical part of the region’s transport network, carrying more than 80,000 vehicles every day.
First opened in 1934, the tunnels were among the most ambitious engineering projects of their time, with construction beginning over a century ago. MBA students explored key operational areas, including ventilation systems and emergency response facilities. With tour guides explaining how traffic flow is monitored and incidents are managed in real time highlighting the complexity of operating such a vital asset.

Students gained valuable insights into risk management, large-scale operations and the challenges of maintaining ageing infrastructure while meeting modern safety and environmental standards.
The tour also revealed a lighter side to the tunnels’ history, having featured as filming locations for movies including Harry Potter, Fast & Furious 6 and TV series, This City Is Ours.
