BA Business Economics and BSc Economics students recently travelled to London, to experience the cities key financial and technology districts first-hand.
Students attended a City Finance Walking Tour, learning how London developed into a global financial centre. The tour included major landmarks such as the Bank of England, Guildhall and Lloyd’s of London, and discussions covered current challenges facing London’s financial sector.
Other areas visited included Silicon Roundabout and the Tech City area, both leading hubs for technology start-ups and global firms.
The visit helped students connect classroom learning with real-world examples of finance, entrepreneurship and urban development, whilst also highlighting career opportunities in these sectors.
Speaking on the visit, one student notes:
"On behalf of all Business Economics students, we really enjoyed touring London and found it exciting to see where some of us will be working when we graduate. We really appreciate how much effort went into making it a great trip!"
Dr Yontem Sonmez, Director of Studies for BA Business Economics and BA Economics added:
"Our recent trip to London was a productive experience and a thoroughly enjoyable opportunity for the cohort to travel together.
We explored the evolution of the financial district, visiting the London Stock Exchange and the Bank of England, before heading to Shoreditch’s vibrant start-up neighbourhood. This second tour offered a great look at the local tech culture, concluding directly in front of Amazon’s headquarters.
It was a pleasure to see the students engaging, as visiting such landmarks is vital for helping them visualise their future career destinations. Moving beyond the classroom provided a brilliant sense of camaraderie and offered important real-world perspective as they look toward their professional lives."
