Sports Operations and Events students explore Etihad Stadium

Published on

Last week, students from the MSc Sports Business and Management programme, enrolled on the Sports Operations and Events (ULMS 859) module, travelled to Manchester for an immersive visit to the Etihad Stadium, home of Manchester City FC.

The trip was led by the module leader Dr Ayan Orujov, accompanied by Management School colleagues Dr Juan de Dios Tena Horillo and Dr Malachy Gavan. Students enjoyed a comprehensive stadium tour that included behind the scenes access to the players dressing room, a pitchside walk, the exclusive Tunnel Club where fans can observe and interact with players on match days, and the press room used for post match media briefings. At each stop, the group reflected on how stadium design, crowd flow and the overall match day experience are managed in practice.

The visit also featured an engaging educational session on careers in football. This explored the wide range of roles that support elite sport, from operations and event management to marketing, analytics, esports, and fan engagement. It provided a practical exploration of key issues, models and theories discussed in the classroom, helping students connect academic learning with real world practice.

The day was both enjoyable and academically enriching, offering students first hand insight into how major sports venues operate and reinforcing University of Liverpool Management School commitment to experiential learning within the growing sports business sector.
