Liverpool leaders Business Breakfast on Recruiting Gen Z

The University of Liverpool Management School hosted its first Business Breakfast of the new academic year on Wednesday 10 September 2025 in collaboration with Liverpool Chamber and Aaron & Partners LLP and the theme was "Recruiting Gen Z."

We welcomed employers, HR professionals and partners for an exciting panel discussion which explored what sets Gen Z apart in the workplace, how to attract and engage them, the balance between salary, purpose and progression and the legal and HR considerations that businesses should be mindful of.

Key takeaways included that Gen Z place real value on self-awareness in the workplace, that employers should prioritise meeting candidates in person as the use of AI in applications can sometimes overstate skills and also that employers need to be mindful of not over-managing this generation - Gen Z want to be trusted and treated like adults, while still appreciating some guidance along the way.

The Q&A session at the end was very successful, allowing room for some interesting discussion.

David Cockayne, Associate Dean Knowledge Exchange and External Engagement at the Management School said:

“It was fantastic to see such a strong turnout and to hear such valuable contributions from across our business community. The event was a real success - not only in highlighting the challenges and opportunities of recruiting Gen Z but also in creating a space for knowledge-sharing and collaboration.”
