It was a fantastic turnout for the Women in Surgery 2019 conference, hosted by Surgical Scousers.

The Keynote speaker, prestigious UoL alumna Professor Averil Mansfield, gave a inspirational talk on the History of Women in Surgery, and students enjoyed the opportunity to hear about the more personal  side to being a surgeon from the female perspective.

The female surgeon who defied all the odds

The first British woman to be appointed a professor of surgery was Liverpool Alumna, Averil Mansfield. Now retired, Averil's extraordinary journey to the top of her field started in a small council house in Blackpool in 1937, check out a great short video on her story.
