'I would not have been able to get through the past few months without my friends'

Jihee Youn, one of the students who is reading the Declaration of Geneva at this years Graduation, answered our questions about her highlights from her time at the School of Medicine.

What is a highlight from your time at the School of Medicine?

"My biggest highlight from my time at the University of Liverpool School of Medicine is ending five years of medical school as a sub-FY1 volunteer during the COVID Pandemic."

Were you a member of any societies or sports groups?

"I was a treasurer of Dermsoc 2019/2020 and a member of University Archery society."

How do you feel you have connected to your classmates over the last couple of months in particular?

"I definitely would not have been able to get through the past few months without keeping in touch with my friends via numerous phone calls and Whatsapp messages.

I want to say to them:  thank you for putting up with me, constantly checking up on me and being supportive. It makes me sad that we are all departing to different parts of UK without saying proper goodbyes."

What are your plans for after graduation?

I am going to rest before starting my FY1 job. I can't wait to be at home with my family!

What advice would you give to yourself as a fresher 5 years ago?

"Good time management is key.  Make sure to have good work-life balance and it's not wise to study all the time!

I realised only too late that first year is actually the most 'relaxing' year out of five, so have fun as much as possible, try out things which you never done before (clubbing, explore the city, join societies, order takeaways)  and try to meet as many new people as possible!

Also make the best out of the summer holiday at the end of first year as it will be the longest holiday you will get during five years of medical school."

Jihee is hoping to publish research in the future. She says that she really enjoyed her time at the School of Medicine.
