Congratulations to Dr Joe Abbott who begins as Deputy Dean this week at Liverpool School of Medicine. Dr Abbott steps into the role from his previous position as Deputy Clinical Director for Year 5 and will continue his clinical work as Consultant in Acute Medicine over the road at Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

Joe is an experienced clinician and educator who completed his MBChB here at the University of Liverpool in 2005. Alongside his clinical career, he developed a specialist interest in medical education, undertaking further qualifications and progressing into a number of educational leadership roles, including Training Programme Director for Acute Medicine in the Mersey region.

At the School, Joe has led the Acutely Ill Patient and Preparation for Practice curriculum themes for several years.

He has been instrumental in delivering significant enhancements to the Year 5 curriculum, including maximising learning opportunities on placement, and introducing teaching on clinical reasoning and decision-making in acute illness.

He has also championed the development of leadership and team-working skills, ensuring that graduates are well prepared to hit the ground running as F1 doctors.

As Deputy Dean, Dr Abbott will be an important member of the School’s senior leadership team and play a strategic role in delivering on objectives connected to the government’s 10 year health plan for England.

Dean of the School of Medicine, Professor Andy McKeown is delighted to welcome Dr Abbott on board, “Joe brings a wealth of experience to the role of Deputy Dean.

As a local Consultant, he brings an authentic link to our local education partners. His experience over the years within the Medical School means he is well placed to identify areas for the School to grow.

Joe will also serve as our Vice Dean Clinical, prioritising the clinical experience our students have both in the undergraduate and postgraduate spheres, working with our clinical colleagues to ensure an excellent experience for our students whilst on placement.”

Joe Abbott says, “The School of Medicine is a fantastic place to work, and I’m honoured to take on this new role. I look forward to working further with colleagues across the School and strengthening collaboration with our partners at clinical placement sites”.

Wishing you all the best in the new role!
