Prize Evening, with a twist! This November, School Prize winners, special guests and staff gathered in the new venue of our Student Hub for a prize evening with tonnes of inspirational entries and even more impressive stories behind the submissions. Grab the popcorn!
School Prizes for achievements in 24-25 were awarded by Dean of the School of Medicine Professor Andy McKeown on his first stint in the role of awards presenter. The prizes were introduced by hosts Dr Iain Young, Vice Dean of Student Experience, Bee Collier, Director of Assessment and Feedback and Dr Fiona-Louise Greeley, Theme Lead Disability and Care in the Community. And we were also thrilled to welcome back Professor Hazel Scott who made the trip down especially to be part of the event.

The handing over of the baton - Professor McKeown and Professor Scott
Professor McKeown kicked things off by reflecting on his first couple of months in the role of Dean which have “made it abundantly clear that our students don’t do things by halves!”
These prizes are such a testament to their passions and interests, and the opportunities they have on this course and within the fantastic NHS network across Liverpool and beyond to develop these further.
In many cases, the prizes were an opportunity for students to further their own medical education and those of their peers, producing learning resources that have now been integrated into the School curriculum for the benefit of others, with one prize winner commenting,
I’ve always had a genuine passion for education and for helping others understand topics that I once found challenging myself. I’m thankful for the chance to share my passion for this topic in a way that’s clear, engaging, and accessible to others.
Professor McKeown shared, “It’s this sense of community, collaboration and comradery that makes the School such a special place to study and work – something that is fuelled by the students themselves and the societies they run, many of our winners tonight I know play an active role in.”

Our 24-25 Prize winners are definitely an impressive bunch! Throughout the evening, we heard tales of wilderness medicine expeditions in Northern India, research into Open Inguinal Hernia Repair and reflections on end-of-life care of a patient encountered during Acute Surgery.
Judges shared their praise of resources diving into portal hypertension, acute angle closure glaucoma and reducing hip fractures in older adults. There were also novel ideas around making endoscopies more sustainable, providing inclusive, approachable advice on HIV and PrEP, and using AI to support a health hub for South Asian patients to help tackle obesity.
