A very warm welcome to Professor Andy McKeown who joins the University of Liverpool as Dean of the School of Medicine.
Born and brought up on the Wirral, Professor McKeown completed undergraduate and postgraduate training in Edinburgh, before joining a GP partnership outside of London. There, his interest in medical education grew, first as a community teacher and then as a member of staff at Imperial College School of Medicine, serving in various Faculty roles. His research interests include Educational Authenticity in Medical Education, as well as Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships. Professor McKeown joins us from Keele University, where he served as Director of Undergraduate Medicine at the School of Medicine.
Professor McKeown has already had the opportunity to meet with many of our student doctors on campus as part of their welcome, and welcome back activities. He is now looking forward to connecting with teams, both within the School and at placement sites across the Liverpool city region, as we work together towards shared goals and ambitions.
Professor McKeown says, “I am incredibly proud to take on this role. I join on a firm footing, and thank Professor Hazel Scott, my predecessor, for leading the School to such outstanding achievements during her time at the University. Having returned to the North West over a decade ago, the interactions I have had with Liverpool students and alumni have made clear how much of a difference our School makes to the health of the City Region, and I am looking forward to working with the entire School community to ensure we continue to nurture excellent clinicians.”
Professor McKeown commenced his role on 1 October 2025.
