Artefacts: Liverpool Medical School’s Performing Arts Society brought magic, music, and mayhem to the stage this April with their vibrant production of Shrek the Musical! Over three nights, the cast and crew transformed a classic fairytale into a hilarious, high-energy spectacle that showcased the incredible talent, creativity, and spirit of the student doctors involved.
Over the last three months, Artefacts have been working hard on this ambitious performance. From 3rd - 5th April, the student-led society staged a comedic adaptation of the beloved film, with direction from this year's Presidents, Kieran Banner and Emily Dean. Their creativity and dedication were evident in every detail—from show-stopping choreography to inventive staging. They were joined by Bibirre Adesanya (staging) and Chinonso Nzewuji (vocals), while Sophie Crawford and Daniel Lam brought the score to life through expert musical direction and a lively band that kept the audience thoroughly entertained.
Alex Harker made a fantastic Artefacts debut as Shrek, bringing heart and humour to the title role. Abbie Smith shone as Princess Fiona, with a performance that balanced comic timing, vocal talent, and emotional depth. Chinonso Nzewuji delighted as the ever-energetic Donkey, while Paul Kalungi’s hilarious portrayal of Lord Farquaad was a clear comedic standout.
Continuing her Artefacts legacy, Bibirre Adesanya wowed the audience with powerful vocals as the Dragon. Amy Warner charmed in dual roles as the Sugarplum Fairy and the feisty Gingy, and Kieran Banner’s falsetto-filled take on Pinocchio brought laughs with every appearance. Amy Lusk impressed with her versatility, playing multiple roles including young Fiona, Peter Pan, and the Dwarf.
The ensemble, made up largely of first-year students, brought vibrant energy and enthusiasm to the stage, with quick costume changes and strong group numbers that truly brought the fairytale kingdom to life. Their performances left no doubt that the future of Artefacts is in safe hands.
Behind the curtain, Lucy Acton and Kai Davies ran backstage operations with precision, ensuring seamless transitions and maintaining the magic throughout each performance. The imaginative set design transformed the space into a whimsical, storybook world that fully immersed the audience.
This production was the highlight of an already exciting year for Artefacts. Following the success of their Annual Variety Show in November and their involvement in LMSS Charity Strictly, the society has made a significant impact on the university’s cultural life. They’ve also been fundraising for The Whitechapel Centre and Islamic Relief UK, raising over £300 for charity this year.
More than just a musical, Shrek the Musical! was a joyful celebration of teamwork, community, and talent. The cast, crew, and creative team should be incredibly proud of their achievements. With such a successful show behind them, we can't wait to see what Artefacts brings to the stage next.
