Top Tips for First Year

Published on

πŸŽ‰ Our final Top Tips is here! As we head into our Spring Term, it is finally our First Year's turn with James and Michael.

πŸ—£οΈ Talk! - Everyone is in the same boat arriving at University. Whether you're fresh from School or beginning as a mature student, it is the first time for all of you studying Medicine. Make the transition easier by saying hello to people & talking to people in your classes and CBLs. You're all in the same boat, so put yourself out there & get to know one another, it'll help you feel more settled in your course.

πŸ“ Build a routine - it can be hard if it is your first time away from home adjusting to the changes of studying academically. Make sure you have a routine and stick to it, it'll give you a structure to help plan your time, but also ensure that you're spending time on campus studying and taking breaks to socialise with fellow students. Remember down time is just as important to planning as study!

⛹️ Join a society - As part of building a routine, you might want to join a society and try a new experience. It doesn't have to be a Sports Society - although they are very popular - but could be something related to your study interests, a community or an activity. There are over 200 societies at the University, with 40+ specifically tailored to Medical students. Spread your wings a bit and try something new!

πŸ‘©β€πŸ« Take an active role in your studies - While much of the course will be new to you, try your best to engage with the material, especially in CBL sessions, as it will reinforce your learning and the subjects you are studying. Keep your notes organised as you'll often need to revisit them for exams, but also as you expand your knowledge in the Second Year of the course.

πŸ₯Ύ Explore! - We're a little biased, but Liverpool has a lot to offer as a city, and make sure you're using your time to explore your new home and getting to know it. Explore Bold St or the Docks, take a trip out to the beach at Formby or head up to Sefton Park. Check out the Tate gallery or take a Ferry over to the Wirral. This is your home for the next few years, so make the most of all it has to offer!

Thanks to everyone who took part in this series! Is there anything else you'd like to see/hear about from your fellow students? What about Clinical & Teaching staff? πŸ€” Let us know!
