Our top tips series continues! This time with Fianna and Tanika offering their best tips for our current Third Year Student Doctors to make the most of their studies.

Fianna was one of the Third Year Reps for 22/23 & is currently a Fourth Year Student Doctor. Tanika is currently intercalating in MSc Psychology having completed her Third Year as a Student Doctor.

Their top tips were:

πŸ‘©β€πŸ« Plan your placement: Do your homework when it comes to your placements & find out what your assessment guidelines are before you arrive at the placement site you have been placed at. This will let you get ahead on things such as DOPs, but also give you a chance to practice any clinical skills that might be relevant to your current placement ahead of time, ensuring you get the most from the experience.

πŸ“‹ Have a note taking system: Throughout Third Year you'll cover many of the core specialities that you will return to throughout Fourth Year and beyond in your studies. Having a well organised set of notes won't just make your revision this year easier, but also when you need to return to these principles in later years. Get into the habit of organising your notes in a constructive way now, so you can easily access them in future.

πŸ›οΈ Make the most of bedside teaching: Bedside teaching is the best chance you'll have to address how specific diseases manifest and to get hands on whilst learning in the process. Use these hours wisely & look to fix any areas you feel you're struggling with during them. If you come prepared with questions, you'll get the most out of them. Use them as part of your learning to reinfornce knowledge and to work on your weaknesses.

🍱 A simple one - bring your own lunch: No one is good at working if they're hungry & it'll save you the cost of buying lunch on placement. Whether it's as simple as making a sandwich the night before or bringing leftovers, plan ahead so you have a good lunch that saves you money.

Thanks again to Fianna and Tanika πŸ™
