Daisy Crane, winner of the Norton Walford Prize for intercalation

Year 4 student Daisy Crane has been awarded the Norton Walford Prize for best student on the course during her intercalating year whilst studying a BSc in Human Physiology at the University of Liverpool.

“Since the start of medical school, I was always interested in intercalation for the excellent opportunity it provides to enhance your knowledge of topics that interest you while offering opportunities for research.

“While studying medicine I greatly enjoyed learning how diseases work on a cellular level and wanted to deepen my understanding.”

My curiosity grew when discussing signalling pathways with anaesthetists during my surgical placement in third year, which I found fascinating and wanted to study on a more specialised level. This led me to intercalating in Human Physiology BSc, which I’m very grateful for as it exceeded all my expectations.

Through my course I was able to expand and strengthen my pathophysiology knowledge while also learning how to analyse and critique research.

“The highlight of my course was conducting a research project into the metabolic changes caused by hypervitaminosis A.  I learnt how to write systematic reviews, perform statistical analysis and draw conclusions from primary data.”

I found it a challenge to learn these skills, but the project sparked in me a love for research which I am continuing to pursue by assisting my supervisor in publishing his hypervitaminosis A work. The knowledge and skills I gained during my intercalation are invaluable and will be a great asset throughout the rest of my time at university and my future career.

“I have loved every minute of my time studying medicine at Liverpool. I have made lifelong friends and enriched my learning by studying at a wide variety of specialist healthcare settings.”

I would like to offer my most sincere thanks to Dr Walford for being awarded the Norton Walford Intercalation Prize. I had a wonderful time studying physiology last year and cannot wait to continue my newfound love for research."
