To cap off an action-packed year of wellbeing, teaching and fundraising activities, Liverpool’s Dermatology Society are delighted to host their annual conference on 'Pioneering Innovations in Dermatology’ this Saturday – and you’re all invited!

DermSoc President Ayra Ahmed and Secretary Charmaine Ncube took a few moments to sum up an exciting year and lift the curtain on what the society has in store for you on Saturday 29th April.

What have the highlights for LivDermSoc been this year?

We are really proud of having raised over £400 for the charity we are championing this year, The British Skin Foundation, through a national dermatology quiz, bake sale and our first ever surgical skills suturing workshop.

We received really great feedback for the overall session and for our three teachers, and we'd like to thank Doctors Elizabeth O'Connell, Oliver Johnson and Shilan Jmor for making it such a success!

Another recent fundraising event was a charity wellbeing Radiance Renewal evening in collaboration with Liv Yoga Society in February. Along with a 1-hour yoga session suitable for all levels, everyone took part in a quiz on busting skin care myths.

The winners on the night managed to scoop a 200-page well-being journal and two tickets to the Everyman Playhouse Theatre!

Our free online finals lecture series has been going strong with seven of our sessions underway and covering high-yield dermatology content based off the curriculum by the British Association of Dermatologists.

We are most proud of the collaborative effort the committee has shown consistently throughout the year to make each event a success!

What do you have coming up?

Our teaching series to support students through exam season continues. We are really looking forward to our annual national conference this Saturday 29th April held right here in Liverpool at the Liverpool Medical Institute, where we will be exploring the theme ‘Pioneering Innovations in Dermatology’.

Dermatology and derm surgery are constantly evolving with high-tech gadgets and new personalised skincare treatments to help further tailor and successfully ensure derm treatments are efficient and effective, whether that be for common skin conditions such as eczema or acne, or more sinister conditions such as skin cancer.

We want to delve in and hear all about it from the experts themselves!

We are very excited to be collaborating with other Northern dermatology societies from universities including Keele, Leeds and Newcastle for the conference, which will provide a great opportunity for students to network with peers and professionals.

Who are you most excited to see speak at the conference?

We are very excited to hear from Dr Stuart Cohen, a consultant dermatologist based at Broadgreen Hospital who is very much involved in our examinations as School Lead hence the a very prestigious reputation as being the Derm Guru of Liverpool!

Dr Thuva Amuthan is a GP with special interest in dermatology, based in the West Midlands. He will be joining us for an impressive talk on life as a GP with his own successful private clinics Dr Derme! He also does a lot for dermatology conditions representations on black skin which is a very important topic and will highlight a lot for our attendees.

Dr Dijon Millette is a dermatology registrar based at Countess of Chester Hospital. He will be giving an interesting lecture on his dermatology work and research which fits well with the theme of pioneering innovations in dermatology.

There will be a pre-recorded lecture from consultant dermatologist Dr Aanchal Paanth and we are excited to hear from this renowned and YouTube famous doctor who will be providing all her knowledge on upcoming and new treatments for acne – a very common skin condition.

students take part in a hands-on workshop

What kind of workshops will students be able to take part in?

We have two great workshops lined up this Saturday. The first by Professor Alex Anstey, author of Under The Skin: A Dermatologist’s Fight To Save The NHS. During this workshop you will have the chance to speak to consultant dermatologist and writer about his life as a junior doctor from training to becoming a consultant. It is a chance for a Q&A and every attendee will receive a complimentary copy of his book released summer 2022, which has been a number one hit as a non-fictional read!

We will also be running a suturing workshop, which is a chance to practice your suturing skills with expert surgeons.

Suturing certificates will be provided to all attendees.

Food, drinks and refreshments will be provided throughout the day and there will be personalised gifts for attendees. We have sold out early bird tickets twice. However, accessibility is extremely important to us. With this in mind, we have reduced the general admission tickets to just £12! Secure your ticket now from the Guild (link).

The conference team has been working extremely hard over the last few months to bring you all an amazing experience! We can’t wait to see you all on Saturday!
