A host of student doctors donned caps and gowns and headed over to the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall this week to celebrate graduating from a range of intercalation courses here at the University of Liverpool.

Each year, many of our student doctors opt to complete an intercalated degree to further develop knowledge and skills that will serve them well for their future career and clinical practice. It was fantastic to see students graduating from such a diverse range of programmes, including the exciting Acute, Critical and Emergency Medicine MSc (link) and MRes in Biomedical Sciences and Translational Medicine (link) and Clinical Sciences (link).

Amongst the graduates was Student Doctor Alastair Patefield who picked up an MRes in Clinical Sciences.

“The teamwork I learnt will make me a better doctor when working with different members of the clinical team. The biggest highlight was when I was informed of my degree classification of distinction and delivering this news to my family.”

Student Doctor Maya Nelson took the Acute, Critical and Emergency (ACE) Medicine course last academic year.

“My intercalation experience has given me a deeper understanding of managing emergencies, assessing clinical images and carrying out procedural skills. I gained lots of hands-on experience as well as excellent teaching and opportunities to assess my own patients.”

Student Doctor Jennifer Lawlor was graduating from Law, Medicine and Healthcare LLM.

“The biggest highlight was being able to study a degree completely different to Medicine, but which will also make me a better doctor having improved my written communication skills significantly, as well as broadened my understanding of the medico-legal intricacies within healthcare.”
