Student Doctor Jasmine Coulthurst has been awarded a prestigious Wolfson Foundation Intercalated Scholarship to support her Master of Research in Biomedical Sciences & Translational Medicine at the University of Liverpool.

Choosing to complete an intercalated degree between year 3 and 4 of the MBChB programme is a fantastic opportunity, which many of our students choose to undertake as an investment in their personal development and future career path.

The Wolfson Foundation Intercalated Scholarship is awarded each year by the Royal College of Physicians to outstanding undergraduate students who are likely to pursue a medical research career.

Jasmine was inspired to pursue an MRes after her involvement in a neuroscience research study.

“I'm most looking forward to diving deep into a subject of interest, gaining research skills, and becoming part of a research team that I hope to continue working with after the intercalation year is over.

The project I will be working on is a retrospective review of tissue and imaging biomarkers of local recurrence in secondary brain tumours.

I will be using image analysis software that has been developed here in Liverpool to analyse brain MRI scans from patients with secondary brain tumours, that have been treated at Liverpool’s Walton Centre.

I will learn how to prepare raw MRI data for analysis, use scripts and software to register images and make measurements from key regions in and around the tumours, which are potential imaging biomarkers of invasion and therefore recurrence.

I will get the chance to work with colleagues from neurosurgical and neurosciences backgrounds and will join the team in their weekly lab meetings, MDT meetings and even in the operating theatre!

I’m delighted to have received this award! It is an honour to have been recognised by the Wolfson Foundation.

The application process is short and self-explanatory. With the great support I received I was able to complete and submit my application in a short amount of time.

I’d like to thank my supervisors Mr Rasheed Zakaria, Professor Poptani, Professor Jenkinson & Mr Christopher Millward for all their help and encouragement with my application.

With the scholarship of £5,000, I'm looking forward to an exciting year ahead!
