Presenters at LivResCon7

Liverpool Research Society welcomed attendees from across the UK (and beyond!) to their 7th National Annual Research Conference, LivResCon7: Adaptability in Medicine: Healthcare for the 21st Century and Beyond in February 2022.

The event was sponsored by INSPIRE, an initiative aimed at promoting and facilitating student research, and gave students the opportunity to learn more about the field of research and showcase their own research work.

Rebecca Early, Student Doctor and Conference Chair, shares more about the event.

After a lot of planning and excitement, our morning was started with three excellent live keynote speakers who each presented interesting and engaging talks, alongside a brilliant pre-recorded talk from our fourth keynote speaker for attendees to access during the day. We had to adjust our schedule slightly when our speakers were affected by power outages caused by Storm Eunice(!) but everyone pulled together and made LivResCon7 a fantastic day!

This year, attendees included doctors, student doctors, dentists, biological science students and pharmacists who had the opportunity to present their work at a national conference.

We had five exceptional live presentations, followed by the opportunity to browse posters and five selected pre-recorded oral presentations during lunch.

This year’s conference was run virtually for the second year in a row due to the COVID pandemic. Whilst we are looking forward to an in-person LivResCon8 in 2023, one exciting advantage of running the conference online is that participants were able attend from all over the country (and globe) from the comfort of their own home, and we welcomed presenters from countries including Greece, India and UAE.

Professor Julian Hiscox, Chair in Infection and Global Health at the University of Liverpool and Deputy Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor of Research and Impact (FHLS) spoke about his areas of expertise in virology, including COVID and other prominent infections such as Ebola.

Professor Matthew Baylis, Executive Dean of Infection and Global Health at the University of Liverpool and Principle Investigator One Health Regional Network for the Horn of Africa (HORN) talked about his career in a talk that was very enlightening for individuals wanting to undertake a career in research.

Dr Matthew Reed, RCEM Professor, NRS Fellow in Emergency Medicine and Research Director Emergency Medicine Research Group Edinburgh (EMERGE) pre-recorded a keynote talk discussing the use of ambulatory monitoring technology for cardiovascular complications such as syncope.

Professor Karuna Sampath, Sampath Laboratory University of Warwick and Associate Editor for Genetics Society of America (GENETICS and) Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology showcased her cutting-edge research. Her work was so cutting edge that we can’t circulate any screenshots!

Three excellent afternoon workshops included “So you want to do the Specialised Foundation Programme?” run by Dr Wan Teng Lee, an Academic/Specialised F1 trainee at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, undertaking a Paediatric Surgery research post at Alder Hey.

Our second workshop was “How to get into research” run by Dr David Lewis a GP partner in Liverpool, Primary care lead NIHR clinical network North West and Clinical Director Liverpool Primary Care Network.

Our final workshop was entitled “How to Survive F1” run by Dr Kim Fleming Clinical Fellow in Palliative Care who provided an excellent interactive workshop highlighting important clinical knowledge and practical/lifestyle advice for Year 5 students who are soon to be undertaking their FY1 rotations.

Top tips for FY1

This year we were able to raise £150 for The Whitechapel Centre in Liverpool who are a leading charity for homelessness and housing, supporting individuals who are sleeping rough, living in hostels or struggling to manage their accommodation.

We had excellent feedback from Dr David Lewis who said “It was a joy to see so many students, from all over the UK and abroad, coming together to share their enthusiasm for research.

The quality and variety of presentations and posters was impressive. These students will become passionate, intellectually curious doctors who will make the world a better place. Congratulations to the team for organising a slick and stimulating conference.

It must have been a lot of hard work and Liverpool should be proud!”
