Following on from the January Student Spotlight on Liverpool School of Medicine Sports Clubs, we are back with round two! Meet Liverpool Medics Tennis, Squash and Cricket Clubs.

As co-captains, Charlotte Hankinson and Harry Southgate help organise and book sessions, coach people who want to learn and progress, organise socials and some friendly matches.

“Students can come along and join in with whatever they feel up to - whether that’s learning something new in skills school, joining in with fun and sociable games, playing competitively, or just having a relaxed hit around. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people, and a chance to really switch off from uni and placement.

It’s such a fun hour each week that I really look forward to, and always feel better for afterwards.

We train once a week usually on a Tuesdays at 7pm but keep an eye on our social media pages as sometimes we will do sessions on other days of the week.

Follow us on Facebook or Instagram where we post about training dates and times for the coming week and come down to Wavertree and join in any time. Send us a message if you’ve any questions.”

Matthew Boyle is club captain. “I’ve been a member of the Medics Squash club since first year and it has been a valuable part of my university experience. I’d never played squash before coming to university - I think that is a common theme at the club!

But the casual and social style of our sessions helped me learn how to play at my own pace and meet people across all years of the School.

Our trips away to play in mini NAMS (National Association of Medical Schools) tournaments are a great way to challenge ourselves competitively whilst also being a social weekend.

We train every Tuesday at the University of Liverpool Sports Centre. You can just turn up! If you have a gym membership at the University that includes access to squash courts then it is free, otherwise it is £3 to enter. Racket hire is also available for a small fee."

Follow the club on Instagram.

Mohammad Faiq Usman is club captain. “I think the best thing about coming to cricket is the range of abilities we all have. It’s nice to see really experienced cricketers training alongside others who are new to the game.

There is a nice light-hearted atmosphere, and you can really gel right in no matter what level you are at.

We train around 3-4 times per month, usually with a good turnout of around 12+ people.

People can get involved through our newly launched Instagram account, through which we can send an invite link to our WhatsApp group chat.
