Student Doctor Steven Toh was thrilled to be invited to present at the British Society of Paediatric Radiology (BSPR) Annual Scientific Meeting this November, where he also got the chance to attend a series of inspirational talks and even perform ultrasound imaging on a (very cute!) infant.

I was invited to present my poster titled “A Case of Colorectal Adenocarcinoma Masquerading as Inflammatory Bowel Disease on the Paediatric Ward” at the BSPR annual scientific meeting 2021, which was held at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh headquarters in the beautiful city of Edinburgh.

The conference lasted 2 days and included a series of talks by international experts, hands-on ultrasound scan workshops and poster presentations by notable local clinical experts.

I felt honored to be able to present the research I had worked on outside of my studies and in collaboration with a team of doctors from the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

At first, I admit I felt a little apprehensive about presenting at such a high level and sub-specialist research conference, but was surprised by the welcoming environment and supportive nature of conference delegates.

I received positive comments about the organisation and content of my poster and felt encouraged to continue my research endeavors in paediatric radiology.

The conference enabled me to enhance my knowledge in imaging and reporting techniques in paediatric musculoskeletal conditions. I was also able to gain hands-on experience performing ultrasound imaging of the hip on an infant, through the guidance of Paediatric Radiology Specialist Dr Howard Harcke.

The BSPR event was informative in highlighting the challenges that radiology trainees are facing and the steps that the college is making to help tackle these. I particularly enjoyed the talk on “Burning Out or Burning Brightly in Paediatric Radiology” by Professor Richard Gunderman.

It inspired me to not only focus on honing my clinical expertise, but also on comforting patients who are in a vulnerable situation and in need of our empathy and support.

Balancing clinical and academic work is never an easy task, and performing research and attending conferences and workshops can be time-consuming, costly, and of course requires mental energy. However, my experience at the BSPR meeting was incredibly gratifying - I was able to meet and network with world leaders in paediatric radiology and further my interest in this specialty. It has encouraged to continue my journey in becoming an academic clinician to maximise the positive impact I deliver in terms of improving patient care.
