Congratulations to Year 5 Student Doctor Yahya Abdullah, who has been awarded the Norton Walford Prize for Physiology for 2019/20.

The prize is awarded to the Student Doctor who has the best exam results at the end of their intercalated Physiology BSc or MRes.

The successful student is awarded a £1000 bursary as part of the honour, to encourage and support their studies and interest in Physiology. Well done Yahya!

Background on the Award Benefactor, Dr Diana Walford

Dr Diana Walford (neé Norton) CBE MA MD BSc MSc FRCP FRCPath FFPH has been Principal of Mansfield College, Oxford University, since 2002.

After qualifying in medicine (MB ChB, Liverpool University, 1968) including an intercalated BSc in Physiology (Hons Class I, 1965). Dr Walford trained and worked as a clinical haematologist in the NHS, with a research interest in sickle cell disease and thalassaemia, before then working at the Department of Health for 16 years, culminating in her appointment as Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England and Director of Healthcare on the NHS Management Executive.

The Norton-Walford Prize is awarded annually aiming to encourage and promote the study of Physiology as an intercalated BSc or MRes within the MBChB programme.
