Welcome message from the Dean of the School of Medicine

Dean of the School of Medicine

Dear Future Doctor!

On behalf of our team, I would like to congratulate you on your success in gaining a place on the Liverpool MBChB programme, and to welcome you to the School of Medicine.

Our School has been training future doctors for 188 years and your development, as a skilled, confident and caring doctor for the future, is important to us. The team at the University and the many expert clinicians across the region work closely together to support our medical student community and we are sure that you will benefit from the breadth and enthusiasm of the specialist skills available to you.

You join us at an exciting time in 2023, in our recently refurbished campus home, Cedar House, and benefitting from a new curriculum and investment in a number of state-of-the-art teaching resources in simulated learning and clinical skills delivery.

Throughout the pandemic and the challenges our NHS has continued to face, I have been so proud at how the School team and our student doctors have responded . Whether that be supporting the NHS through volunteer work, powering vaccination efforts across the region, or simply with a smile or kind word to patients in their care.

Since then, it has been wonderful to work with students to establish a new approach to learning post-pandemic – offering increased flexibility and variety across in-person lectures, small group teaching sessions and self-led learning online.

The School community has also been more united than ever, and has embraced new and innovative ways to develop and support one another over the past couple of years. I invite you to dip into some of our students’ biggest highlights and fondest memories on our Life at the School web page.

Our Admissions team have guided you through the application process and you will continue to be supported by the Year 1 team, who will be in touch with you with practical tips on how to prepare for your arrival in Liverpool.

We will also contact you with further details of the events being planned by the many medical student societies, as they look forward to welcoming you in September. Our vibrant community of student doctors have set up and take part in a wide variety of interest groups, from sports, to medical specialties, music and everything in between. It is a great way to make new friends and meet fellow new arrivals and returning students, happy to help show you the ropes.

I look forward to meeting you personally, as part of the introductory week on campus and I hope to be able to see you at many other events over the year.

Although there is a lot of information to take in during Welcome Week and in the first term, we will work hard to make sure that your transition is as smooth as possible. All of us in the  School hope that you are beginning what will be an exciting, enjoyable and successful journey.

If you have any questions regarding the information sent to you by the School, please do get in touch with us via year1mbchb@liverpool.ac.uk and we will be happy to help.

Congratulations again on achieving a place on our programme. I very much look forward to welcoming you to the School in person in September.
