Professional Practice Module
At University of Liverpool, we offer a Professional Practice module (ARCH623) which runs every year from January – August. The module is offered to year-out students in practice who have completed their undergraduate programme and gained exemption from RIBA Part 1.
Over seven months (January – July), the module will provide resources to support you during your year out and assist with the production of your PEDR records. It is intended to provide context to many of the things that you are learning, observing and being involved with whilst in practice.
The topics to be covered are:
- Professionalism / The architect in business
- Clients, Stakeholders, Terms of Appointment the Design team.
- Procurement, Project Management, Health and Safety
- Fees
- The Legal Framework, Planning and Building regulations
- Construction Matters, Quality and cost control
- Contracts and Cost Control
The module is held online once a month over lunchtime for 1.5 hours on the final Wednesday of every month (although there may be some occasions where we will need to change this date). The format will be two 30min presentations given by Architects or associated members of the construction industry, followed by a short discussion and Q&A session.
There will also be an in-person sessions held at Liverpool School of Architecture, 25 Abercromby Square in April. You are expected to attend this session on campus.
Each month you will receive a short reading list and details of a 600-word assignment, which could form part of your quarterly PEDR. Students of the module will be allocated to small study groups and encouraged to discuss the projects you are working on or observing for your monthly assignments. The conclusion of the course is an online exam which will take place in early August.
As part of the course, University of Liverpool will offer Professional Studies Advisor service, sign your quarterly PEDR records and provide initial support and guidance about their completion. The PSA service covers 12 months of PEDR sheets (4 quarterly sheets). You can submit PEDRs for signing off before the course starts, if appropriate. Please note that subscription to the PEDR website is not included with this service, please visit www.pedr.co.uk for more details.
The cost of the module is £300, that fee is refundable if you choose to return to study your MArch at University of Liverpool, are admitted onto the programme and confirm your place before the end of May. If you do choose to return to study MArch, and provided you have passed the course, the University will count it as prior learning and you will not be required to do Professional Practice ARCH408 in Semester 1 of MArch4.
