The Liverpool School of Architecture is set to launch a new master’s programme in urban development and heritage management, as part of a major international research project.

MSc Global Urbanism and Heritage will address the growing demand for qualified professionals who have the expertise to harness the opportunities presented by rapid urban development, whilst safeguarding heritage assets and preserving the individual identities of expanding cities.

It is one of the research activities linked to the School’s £2.2m Leverhulme International Professorship grant, the main output of which is the establishment of an international heritage and coastal urbanism research lab to investigate how the dual threat of rapid globalisation and climate change impact built and cultural heritage across cities in West Africa.

From September 2026, the MSc in Global Urbanism and Heritage will build on this by combining architecture, urban planning, sustainability and globalisation to offer a responsible approach to urban development and heritage management.
Leading the one-year, full-time programme will be Professor Taibat Lawanson from the University of Lagos, who joins the Liverpool School of Architecture as part of the Leverhulme award.

“We look forward to welcoming the first cohort onto our new MSc in 2026, with the aim of producing the next generation of experts who will provide sustainable approaches to urban development and heritage management”, commented Professor Lawanson.

“This will greatly support the work of the international heritage and coastal urbanism research Lab in responding to the UN’s sustainable Development Goals.”

Applications for MSc Global Urbanism and Heritage will open in October 2025. For further information, and to register your interest, please visit the MSc Global Urbanism and Heritage.
