This summer, students from the Liverpool School of Architecture worked in collaboration with a school community from Kyparissia, Greece, to design and built an outdoor teaching installation using recycled and natural materials.
The collaboration began earlier in the year with a lively online co-design session where BA1 students presented their early ideas and received valuable feedback from the pupils and teachers of Kyparissia’s secondary school. Building on that exchange, and based on continuous feedback, the team developed their ideas further and finally travelled to Greece to realise the project on site.
Together with the local school community they created a new outdoor learning space using natural and recycled materials and vernacular earthen construction techniques, including mudbricks, earthbags, light clay and cob building. The result is a practical and functional installation with outdoor seating and space for planting, that will support teaching and play in the school courtyard, while celebrating sustainable building practices.
The project was made possible through the financial support of the University of Liverpool School of the Arts and the University’s Global Opportunities Fund.
A huge thank you and congratulations to our BA1 architecture students who participated whose creativity, energy and hard work made this project a success, as well as to the staff that supported them, and our partners in Kyparissia for their invaluable collaboration.
