This talk will engage in critical dialogue, share best practices and reflect on strategies that prioritise Global South values and knowledge systems in the development of local - regional heritage management and protection practices in Africa.
In an increasingly interconnected world, the Global South is emerging as a powerful force for innovation, resilience, and mutual support. These changes require promoting exchange of knowledge, resources, technology, and expertise. Unlike traditional North-South cooperation models, global South-South cooperation is based on principles of equality, mutual benefit, and respect for sovereignty. In this context, the challenges affecting management and protection of cultural, natural and intangible heritage in Africa requires multi-stakeholder approach that harnesses human and technological, financial and other resources in the global south. The speaker will briefly set out the rationale for the founding of the Global South Exchange Network (GSEN) whose key aim is South-South Cooperation, explore the responses to date from some of the international and regional education, culture and heritage agencies and civil society to this new and critical cultural network and GSEN’s aspirations for the future. This talk will bring together heritage professionals, academics, practitioners and civil society to explore and expand the potential of South-South cooperation as a powerful tool for lateral peer support and resource sharing in developing local models of heritage management that promote self-sustainability and self- determination. The discussion will focus on Africa as an example of South-South cooperation. Participants will engage in critical dialogue, share best practices and reflect on strategies that prioritises African values and knowledge systems. This talk is not only a call to action but seeks to promote the ingenuity and solidarity of leaders in the Global South in their development of local - regional heritage management and protection practices.
