The talk explores the complex relationship between cultural heritage and rapid urbanisation in a Nigerian context. As Nigerian cities expand and modernise, their rich tangible and intangible heritage face significant threats, but also presents unique opportunities for sustainable development. Through a comparative analysis of three purposefully selected Nigerian cities (Lagos, Kano and Calabar), I share insights into how heritage is being integrated into urban planning, the strategies employed to leverage it for economic and social growth and the primary challenges encountered. The talk outlines that successful heritage-led development often involves innovative policy frameworks, strong institutional support and meaningful community engagement. However, it also highlights persistent challenges, including inadequate funding, weak legal frameworks and the pressures of socioeconomic disparities. The talk concludes by asserting that a paradigm shift is needed, one that moves beyond viewing heritage as a static relic to embracing it as a dynamic and integral resource for creating resilient, inclusive and culturally vibrant Nigerian cities. The talk contributes to a deeper understanding of how these cities can effectively balance preservation with progress to achieve sustainable urban futures.
