The Liverpool Law School International Internship Programme: Summer 2013

The Liverpool Law School is delighted to announce that a number of students have been awarded summer internships with firms in Singapore and Malaysia. Following a competitive process, where students had to demonstrate strong academic ability and legal awareness, the successful students, all in the second year of their studies, were selected.

These internships will provide an excellent opportunity to acquire valuable practical experience in a working environment, while learning from highly-skilled legal professionals.

Congratulations to the following students, it will prove to be an amazing experience.

 

James Thomas -BW Group, Singapore

As a global owner and operator of a fleet of more than 70 technically advanced petroleum and gas vessels, BW Group is one of the world’s leading maritime groups. BW employs more than 2800 highly skilled and dedicated people across the world, providing high quality ocean transport and offshore solutions for the world’s leading energy companies and traders.

The legal team currently consists of several lawyers and marine insurance experts, including Nicholas Fell, BW’s General Counsel, and a graduate of the University of Liverpool. Nicholas has selected James Thomas to complete their summer placement, which will be based in their busy Singapore office.

James will spend three to four weeks during the summer working in their legal department, focusing on the legal aspects of shipping, energy and international trade. During his internship James will be involved in a number of tasks including project work, researching legal issues, drafting and amending contracts and assisting with litigation and arbitration matters.

Lauren Ryan -Donaldson and Burkinshaw, Singapore

Established since November 1874, Donaldson and Burkinshaw is one of the oldest law partnerships in Singapore. They have been profiled in leading legal periodicals such as Legal 500, Asia Law Profile, Chambers, Who’s Who Legal, Managing Intellectual Property Magazine, and Asian Legal Business. They practice in a number of areas, including Intellectual Property Practice, Litigation and Dispute Resolution, Real Estate Practice and Corporate and Commercial Practice.

Lauren Ryan has been selected to complete their summer placement, where she will gain a wide range of practical legal experience, while based in their busy Singapore offices.

The placement will include a variety of tasks such as legal drafting and research, watching solicitors in court/tribunals to observe advocacy, sitting in at client meetings to learn how to obtain effective and clear instructions from clients and participating in case discussions with solicitors.

Katy Oakes -Hill Dickinson, Singapore

As one of the world’s largest International shipping law practices, Hill Dickinson has built a strong reputation for both innovation and service excellence. In recent years, its Singapore branch has continued to build on this tradition by offering a wide range of shipping law expertise.

From their Singapore office, Hill Dickinson handles all manner of casualty, salvage, P&I, FD&D and insurance work, working with high profile clients including leading shipowners and cruise and ferry operators.

Katy Oakes has been selected to take part in their summer internship, where she will spend two weeks in their Liverpool office on their official vacation scheme before flying into Singapore to spend two weeks in their busy Singapore office. As part of her placement, Katy will be able to develop her knowledge of shipping law, gaining experience in Commercial Litigation and Arbitration work i.e. International Commercial Dispute Resolution.

Farouk Mohd Anuar –Adha, Selvi and Associates, Malaysia

Farouk Mohd Anuar has been selected to take part in their summer internship and will gain an insider's view into a career in law, providing valuable insight and practical experience. The placement will include a variety of tasks such as legal drafting and research, watching solicitors in court/tribunals to observe advocacy, sitting in at client meetings to learn how to obtain effective and clear instructions from clients and participating in case discussions with solicitors. Farouk will also have a supervisor who will work closely with him to ensure he is fully supported and reaches his full potential while on placement.
