Professor Adam Bodnar, former Ombudsman (Commissioner for Human Rights) in Poland from 2015 - 2021, has been appointed the new Minister of Justice of the Republic of Poland. We wish congratulations to Adam Bodnar on this appointment as a former fellow and long-standing collaborator of the School of Law and Social Justice.

As part of the International Visiting Fellowship Programme, Adam Bodnar was a visiting fellow associated with the International Law and Human Rights Unit at the School of Law and Social Justice from 2021-2022, bringing expertise and experience in the areas of human rights to the University of Liverpool. He remains a long-standing collaborator of the International Law and Human Rights Unit and the wider School of Law and Social Justice.

Professor Kanstantsin Dzehtsiarou, Director of the International Law and Human Rights Unit, said:
“Adam Bodnar’s appointment is a very positive development as he is among the most prominent Polish lawyers and experts in human rights. He will be able to make a real change in Poland by bringing more human rights and the rule of law in the decision making of the Ministry of Justice. The International Law and Human Rights Unit had very fruitful collaboration with Adam in the past and we hope that our research partnership will continue in the future”.

Professor Adam Bodnar's academic work focusses on constitutional law and human rights. During his term of office as Commissioner for Human Rights, his goals included protecting citizens from unlawful state activities and safeguarding human rights. Bodnar has been and continues to be involved in numerous non-governmental organisations dedicated to the protection of human rights. We wish him all the best in his new and very challenging endeavour.
