A weighing scales in gold

Professor Valsamis Mitsilegas, Dean of the School of Law and Social Justice, has been cited by the Court of Justice of the European Union in the first Opinion on the operation of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, for his research published in Shifting Perspectives on the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The Chapter, titled ‘The European Public Prosecutor’s Office and Human Rights’, co-authored by Professor Mitsilegas and Fabio Giuffrida, Queen Mary University of London, was referenced by CJEU Advocate General, Ms Tamara Ćapeta, in Case C-281/22.

This marks the fourth time Professor Valsamis Mitsilegas’ research has been referenced in Opinions from the Court of Justice of the European Union this year.

In May, Professor Mitsilegas’ book, EU Criminal Law, was drawn upon in cases linked to defence rights, and the right to fair trial in criminal proceedings. Professor Mitsilegas’ book, EU Criminal Law, was also referenced in a case involving the application of defence rights in EU law, which was delivered on 23 March 2023.

It is a great testament to the School of Law and Social Justice that our researchers’ work is recognised internationally.
