Algarve Field Class

Year 3 – ENVS 380

This 30-credit, Year 3 physical geography module aims to understand the physical and biological landscape of the Algarve region of Portugal, particularly how the landscape has been modified by human action. Students will examine a variety of processes which take place over both the long- and short-term and explore how water, landscape and vegetation have been managed in the past, and how best to manage them in the future.

The module again gives students the chance to explore these processes in a non-UK environment. Projects have included: studies of the impact of land use on soils; interpreting past climates to understand land-use change in the region; exploring short-term and recent impacts on land use, and; projections of future land-use given the onset of climate change.
