Assessment and progression
Pre-sessional English courses include regular assessments to monitor your progress and prepare you for academic study.
Types of assessment
Assessments may include:
- academic essays
- listening and reading tests
- seminar discussions
- presentations
- research projects.
These assessments combine reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
Assessments on longer courses
Students on the 40-week and 30-week courses complete formative assessments throughout the course.
These help you:
- understand your current level
- identify areas for improvement
- prepare for later stages of study.
Assessments on the 20-week course
Students take assessments halfway through the course and again at the end of the stage.
You must achieve the required level to progress to the 10-week summer course.
If you do not reach the required score, you may not be able to continue your Pre-sessional studies.
Final assessments
All students complete final assessments during the last four weeks of the course.
These include:
- a research project
- lecture and seminar discussions
- reflective writing
- a reflective presentation.
Progression to your degree
Your final mark is calculated using the results of your assessments.
The score required to progress depends on the English requirement for your academic programme.
Most students who successfully complete the course can progress directly to their degree without retaking IELTS. Please check the conditions in your offer letter for more information.
