Academic Language & Skills Classes

As an international student you may have studied General English for many years already, taken a course in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or studied on a Pre-sessional English course before starting your academic programme, but it may still be difficult to understand the how language is used in higher education and research.  The English Language Centre (ELC) provides Academic Language and Skills (ALS) classes tailored to different subject areas across the University to help you succeed in your studies.

Undergraduate & Taught Postgraduate Students

The In-Sessional English Team works closely with departments in designing courses which relate to your core academic modules and the skills that you will need to be successful on your programme. Our classes might, for example, use key texts relating to your subject area, consider language issues relating to a lecture or assignment, or help you prepare for an assessment or examination.

If a class like this has been set up for your course, it will appear on your personalised timetable to fit with your regular schedule and most of our classes start in week 3 of Semester 1. These classes are offered at all levels of UG study, and for postgraduate taught courses where schools and departments have requested them.
