Academic Language & Skills Classes

The In-Sessional English Team works closely with departments in designing courses which relate to your core academic modules and the skills that you will need to be successful on your programme. Our classes might, for example, use key texts relating to your subject area, consider language issues relevant to a lecture or assignment, or help you prepare for an assessment or examination.

These classes are offered at all levels of study where schools and departments have requested them.  If a class has been set up for your course, it will appear on your personalised timetable to fit with your regular schedule.  Most of these classes start in week 3 of Semester 1 and may continue through Semester 2.

For PGR students we also offer Thesis-writing classes. These provide academic English language support to enable you to deal with the various aspects of writing a postgraduate thesis.  Researching and writing a thesis can be a lonely and intimidating task, so the materials presented on this course aim to be accessible in order to build confidence and act as a springboard for students to better tackle their own work. The materials also aim to stimulate discussion so that the many conventions surrounding theses and dissertations can be ‘demystified’. Topics covered include: Nominalisation and Noun Phrases; Coherence and clarity; Exposition + Data Commentary; Data Interpretations; and Writing conclusions and abstracts.
