Faculty of Health & Life Sciences Translational Funding (TRAP)

The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS) has funding for projects with a viable translational pathway towards practical application. It comprises complementary schemes using match funding from external sources managed by FHLS.

Wellcome Institutional Translational Partnership Award (ITPA):

Translational Research Access Programme (TRAP)

The Translational Research Access Programme (TRAP) is open for the latest round of applications, deadline Wednesday 5 April 2023.

The objective of TRAP is to provide pump priming funding with the explicit intention of promoting translational research via new collaborations between the University of Liverpool and its local healthcare community, primarily to address health issues of the Liverpool City region.  It is intended to provide an opportunity for team science, led by new pairs of researchers (a FHLS or Faculty of Science and Engineering clinician/non-clinical investigator and a clinically active Consultant (where this is a nurse or allied health professional they should have research experience*) working in one of our eligible healthcare partner trusts OR a member of one of our two sister Faculties at the University of Liverpool), to mutually develop new areas of research that will progress towards applied outcomes or lead to applications for substantial external translational funding. Full details are on the TRAP application form April 2023.

at least 7 years’ experience post-registration and significant post-registration study (Masters degree / professional diploma).

TRAP is jointly funded by FHLS and the Wellcome Institutional Translational Partnership Award which runs Feb 2021-September 2023. This fifth round is for smaller and shorter projects- awards can be up to £20k in value (£50k available for all projects), and need to be completed by September 2023, when the WITPA ends. Applications received for TRAP will be evaluated by a panel of senior University of Liverpool academics along and with Liverpool Health Partners (LHP) representation.

Early Career Researcher ‘Dragon’s Den’ Translational Award

FHLS welcomes all Early Career Researchers to apply for translational research funding, and applications can be jointly led with more senior University of Liverpool colleagues if desired. The Awards provide Early Career Researchers with pump priming funding for translational research. It is intended to provide an opportunity for ECRs (a clinical or non-clinical investigator) to develop new or ongoing areas of research that will progress rapidly towards improved clinical outcomes with line of sight to substantive translational funding. Applications from collaborative multi-disciplinary partnerships are strongly encouraged.

Awards are aimed at translational projects to develop pilot data to support more substantive grant applications, and must identify a specific funding call they are targeting for follow-on work, or equivalent (e.g. patent application, industry partnership/collaboration). The project should address a health issue of significance with priority given to applications that consider relevance to the Liverpool City region. You can find full details on the ECR Dragons Den ECR application form 2023 (April) - colleagues can contact tina.lewis@liv.ac.uk if unable to download/open the ECR Dragon's Den application form link.

Those with potentially translatable research already underway, can bid for pump priming funds of <£15k (£70k available in total), for projects that can be completed by September 2023. Deadline for applications is Wednesday 5 April 2023.
