English Language BA

Why did you choose to study English at the University of Liverpool?

I chose to study at Liverpool because I came to visit an exhibition in one of the museums in the city with my family and I remember being so impressed by the city. In terms of the University itself I visited an open day during my gap year and one of the lecturers on the English Language course had such an enthusiasm for his research field it made me excited to attend the University and to study English Language specifically.

What do you enjoy most about the course, and why?

I enjoy the broad range of topics that I study as part of my course. I chose English Language because I enjoyed it throughout my school career, and I wanted to continue to study some of the topics I had learned, such as Child Language Acquisition. However, the new topics I had previously never come into contact with have been just as enjoyable for me, if not more.

Can you tell us about an exciting project or essay you have completed on your course?

I completed an exciting project about the applications of different gendered language theories to scenes from the popular Netflix show ‘The Good Place’. I found this project interesting because it allowed me to apply the things I had learned in my lectures and seminars to a show I regularly watched and was interested in. It was fascinating to see how the frameworks I had learned in class could be applied to something from popular culture.

What does Liverpool have to offer as a city?

Liverpool has a lot to offer as a city, including museums - The World Museum, Maritime Museum, and the Museum of Liverpool. It has a vibrant nightlife and a vast array of shops and restaurants, as well as great travel connections and the docks are really beautiful. Liverpool won the European Capital of culture in 2008 and has connections with popular musicians such as The Beatles and Cilla Black, and you can really feel the music culture within the city. It has more recently been the filming location for ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘The Batman’ and I believe that part of this is because of the impressive architecture littered around the city. It’s exciting to see Liverpool represented on the big screen.

Can you tell us about the teaching methods/how your learning has been facilitated?

Most of my learning is individual learning. I usually have around four hours of lectures per week along with two hours of seminars and then the rest of my time is taken up with reading and seminar work which I do individually. I enjoy doing most of my work at the libraries as these are great facilities.

What are your ambitions for the future and how will your experiences at the University of Liverpool help you in your future career?

My ambition for the future is to get a job that I really enjoy, and I hope that the experiences I have gained through studying at The University of Liverpool will help me to do that. I hope to have a career in copywriting and then maybe at some point go back into education in the form of a Master’s degree and I know that the various skills I have learned through studying English Language will allow me to do both of these things.
