Our programmes chart how literature and language have developed over time, from the middle ages to the present. We have a strong interest in current developments in speech and writing of all kinds.
You can study a single honours programme in English, specialising in literature or language, or a balance of the two. A levels in either discipline are acceptable for entry, regardless of which you wish to pursue for your degree.
Additionally there are opportunities to study English with another subject on a 50-50 split, through the University's combined honours programmes.

Our degree programmes allow you many options. You could for example combine the study of specific literature literary genres and periods with language topics such as sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, psycholinguistics, pragmatics or a creative writing component.
Through our internationally recognised research we are constantly developing our curriculum, so whatever your options you can be confident your programme will be relevant and fresh.
