Congratulations and welcome!
Congratulations on becoming part of the University of Liverpool Physics community.
We're delighted that you've chosen to study with us and can't wait to welcome you to the Department. Starting university is a major milestone, and our staff and students are here to help you settle in, make new friends, and get the most out of your time at Liverpool.
During Welcome Week you'll have opportunities to:
- Meet your lecturers and fellow students
- Learn about the support available throughout your degree
- Explore the department and campus
- Take part in social activities, including our rooftop BBQ (weather permitting!)
- Get prepared for your first semester of study
We know there's a lot to take in before you arrive, but don't worry—we'll guide you through everything step by step.
Before You Arrive
Register and Download the MyLiverpool App
Your Welcome Week timetable and key information will be available through the MyLiverpool app once you have completed registration.
Make sure you check your University email regularly before arriving, as we'll use it to send important updates.
Find Your Way Around
Liverpool is a compact and friendly campus, but your first day can still feel daunting.
Use the University campus map to locate your teaching buildings and key facilities before arrival.
Welcome Week
Welcome Week is designed to help you transition smoothly into university life.
Throughout the week you'll:
- Meet academic and professional services staff
- Learn how teaching works in the Department of Physics
- Discover the support available for your wellbeing and academic success
- Meet your Academic Advisor
- Get to know your fellow students
- Take part in social events and departmental activities
Our goal is to make sure you feel confident, informed and connected before teaching begins.
Mission to Mars
One of the highlights of your first few weeks will be Mission to Mars.
Working in teams, you'll tackle a one-week challenge to plan a mission to Mars. It's a great opportunity to get to know your classmates, develop problem-solving skills, and start thinking like a physicist from day one.
Teaching modules begin immediately afterwards.
Calculators and Exams
The Department operates an approved calculator policy for examinations.
If you already own an approved calculator, bring it with you and we'll provide a departmental approval sticker. Don't worry if you haven't purchased one before arriving—there will be additional opportunities later in the semester to have calculators checked and approved.
Full details of approved models will be provided before teaching begins.
More support and information for starting your course
Physics Student Support Office
The Student Support Office offers help and advice for all Physics students. This can be found in the School of Physical Sciences School Office (Chadwick Building), opposite the Central Teaching Laboratories. The team are available Monday – Friday, from 9AM – 5PM and can be contacted by:

Academic Advisor
Every student is assigned an Academic Advisor who will support your academic development and help you navigate university life.
Student Support Services
The University provides specialist support covering wellbeing, disability support, finances, academic skills and student life.
