We currently offer several different opportunities to students in year 12 and year 13.

Our masterclasses provide a hands-on introduction to university-level physics and cutting-edge research. Additionally, we offer work experience and research placements to students in year 12. To keep up to date with our upcoming events, please contact Physicsoutreach@liverpool.ac.uk.

Particle Physics Masterclass

As part of the International Particle Physics Outreach Group (IPPOG), we host an annual Particle Physics Masterclass for A-level students. The event showcases what it is like to be a particle physicist for a day via a series of talks and hands-on activities analysing real data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. A videoconference with CERN and a virtual tour of an LHC experiment give you the chance to have your questions answered by leading particle physicists at CERN. Tours of the undergraduate teaching laboratories and experiment demonstrations give an insight into life as a Physics student at Liverpool. Over 150 students from 20 schools across the North West UK and as far afield as Jersey attended the 2025 edition. The next masterclass will take place in Spring 2027.

Physics Olympics

Liverpool Physics Olympics is a fun Physics-based competition for teams of four students. The event is aimed at students currently studying A-Level Physics. Each team will take part in a series of activities with a Physics slant, but also requiring some teamwork, lateral thinking, organisation, planning, etc.

Liverpool Physics Olympics returned in 2025 after a short hiatus, welcoming 28 teams to the University of Liverpool for a day of tough competition. Overall 1st place was taken by Stretford Grammar School, followed closely by Cronton Sixth Form College in 2nd and University of Liverpool Maths School in 3rd. The event was run with support from the University of Liverpool, the Astrophysics Research Institute at Liverpool John Moores University, and Mirion Technologies, who kindly sponsored the event.

The competition will be returning this year on Saturday 7 November 2026. If you would like to register your interest, so that we may contact you when registration opens, please email our outreach team.

Levelling Up: STEM Programme

Levelling Up: STEM is a mentorship programme aimed at small groups of local A-Level students from underrepresented backgrounds, helping them to boost their grades while also learning about what it takes to be a STEM university student.

These sessions take place once a week at a local school, accessible by public transport; comprising of a mixture of tutoring based around the subject area and material about applying to university and university life.
