What is Meet the Scientists?
Meet the Scientists is an annual series of interactive science days for families, brought to you by the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences in partnership with the World Museum.
Running since 2015, this is a well-established and popular event. The University is committed to making science accessible to the public and inspiring young minds, and where else is better to do it than Meet the Scientists!
There will be researcher scientists from many different specialities, who have brought along activities and experiments suitable for families and children for you to get your hands on.

Examples of stands at past events
- Galactic Quest - this activity will be an interactive boardgame where we will learn together about space, space exploration, the international space station and planetary defense.
- My Marvellous Medicine - We have some special tasting strips that can tell you whether you are a super taster! Then we can make our own personalised medicine in a bottle.
- Mysterious mammals and where to find them - find out about the mammals that live in Britain and the signs they leave behind. We will show you how we use footprint tunnels and camera traps to monitor mammals. You can get crafty and design your own footprints or use our custom footprint stamps. We will also show you how you can set up footprint tunnels in your own outdoor space.
- Poo Station - what is poo made of? What does healthy poo look like? Can we identify diseases from the smell of poo? Come and learn all about gut microbes and how they can keep us healthy
- Hypoxia Chamber of Secrets - what is hypoxia and how does it affect cancer treatment? Come and blast your way through our giant inflatable intestine and find out how our research is working to improve radiotherapy treatment. We will also have a keyhole surgery simulator where you can handle instruments and perform a timed task with a leaderboard to test your skills.
- MicroAge: Sending muscles into space - build your very own version of the equipment used for the MicroAge project, launched on SpaceX-24 to the International Space Station
- Inside Our Body – bones, muscles and organs - pin the organs on the body. Can you identify some of the organs of our body and locate them on the mannequins? Learn what these organs do for us, and why it’s important to keep them healthy. What is a bone? Assemble some limbs using a selection of model bones, with our friendly skeleton to help.
