Cowrie Scholarship

Founded in 2020, and a Liverpool partner since 2022, The Cowrie Scholarship Foundation allows economically disadvantaged black students to attend UK universities.

The Cowrie Scholarship Foundation believe race and social class should not limit access to university, and are committed to equality for Black British students. Founded on and guided by the values of equality, inclusion and diversity, the Foundation is aiming to transform the lives of 100 disadvantaged Black British student lives through education at UK universities over the next decade.

Founded by University of Liverpool alumni Professor Richard OC Oreffo, inspired by the advantage’s education provided him with, the Foundation advocates that knowledge is power and finance should not be a barrier to both education and opportunity.  Fellow alumnus David Olusoga is also a Foundation trustee, strengthening the bond between the University and Foundation.

The Cowrie Scholarship Foundation has partnered with Liverpool University to support three scholars over ten years of Black African and Caribbean heritage from socio-economically under-represented backgrounds. The Scholarship consists of a bursary from the University of Liverpool and an award of £6,000 per annum from the Cowrie Scholarship Foundation.

Through partnerships with universities, businesses and donors, the foundation is empowering the development of stdents.

“Education has the power to transform lives, not only for the students but for their families, the wider community and indeed the world. As an alumnus, I am delighted, the University of Liverpool is part of the scholarship programme, providing an opportunity for socio-economically disadvantaged Black British students to enter higher education. Lives will change.”

Professor Richard OC Oreffo, Founder of the Cowrie Scholarship Foundation
