English Language BA

Why did you choose to study English at the University of Liverpool?

I enjoyed the subject during A-Levels and after looking at the course for Liverpool, I thought it would be interesting to continue with it.

Can you tell us about an exciting project or essay you have completed on your course?

I enjoy the range of topics and depth we go into for them, it makes each lecture or workshop different to the next which is always good for a course like this when it is mostly theory based. For one of the assignments we had recently we got to choose our topic and text to work on, which was interesting to be able to work independently on something I knew I would be interested in. Another project was to collect our own data on child language development, which showed a more analytical approach to the course. It helped me see the range of study that can be done under the course and the areas of research that are out there.

What does Liverpool have to offer as a city?

I think moving to Liverpool was a good choice in terms of having a city that doesn’t feel too big. In the city centre you have the shops, restaurants, and bars as you’d expect, but the docks have a nice range of museums or places to walk around which some cities don’t have. The more student-y areas are good to go to with friends, as well for things to do. It’s a great city to be in when you’re finding your feet at university.

Can you tell us about the teaching methods/how your learning has been facilitated?

The way the course is taught works well for getting one-on-one support from lecturers, but also for doing your own thing outside of lectures. The workshops are smaller group sessions that expand on the work done in the lectures that were earlier in the week. A lot of the course is self-led, the reading and prep work take up most of the week outside of timetabled sessions. There is always the option to get in touch with lecturers outside of these sessions, and I’ve found it very helpful to do this during my time here.

What are your ambitions for the future and how will your experiences at the University of Liverpool help you in your future career?

At the moment I’m hoping to get into the publishing industry. I think the range of work I’ve done while at the University has helped me to develop my ways of thinking about things differently, of seeing the potential of something, and I hope this will be transferable to a career. The choice of modules has been great for deciding the route I want my degree to go, which meant I could tailor it to my interests and future plans.
