Student Profile: Madelyn Walsh

Why did you choose to study English at the University of Liverpool?

The English department seemed welcoming and enthusiastic, and showcased a real variety of expertise for different genres, periods, and research. Studying English at Liverpool seemed like an exciting prospect, and I have not been disappointed. In fact, I decided to stay in Liverpool purely because of the English department when choosing my MA course!

How has University been different from A-levels?

It is an entirely new world! I think the most crucial difference is the freedom in every part of your life. You suddenly are solely in charge of everything, and while this may seem daunting, you settle in quickly and it is a fantastic experience. With regards to studying, you now are working with a firm but flexible mark scheme, and can develop your own interests and sense of style as you progress in the course. By the end of third year, you can expect to be writing your own essay questions and dive down into the research that fascinates you.

Rapid fire questions for Madelyn Walsh

What has surprised you most about Liverpool?

The friendly and unwavering character of the city. It has charm, and what’s more, it knows it! And the INCREDIBLE food on Bold Street. Heavenly.

What extra-or co-curricular activities do you take part in, and how do these affect your student experience?

I was a member of the English Society throughout my undergraduate, which was excellent for meeting course mates. They organise socials, events, trips that are a lot of fun!  Some of these include Bongos Bingo, Stratford-upon-Avon, and Amsterdam! I also joined the baking society. Note, you can go simply to eat all the delicious baked goods. I joined the cocktail society, the film society, and the go-karting society. I think joining societies is one of the best aspects about university, because it is a fantastic way to make friends when you first get here, and try out new experiences that you’ve always wanted to.

If you could go back, what advice would you have given yourself before going to University?

To relax! Liverpool is such a great city, and the English department is so supportive of its students. There was nothing to worry about!
