Early Modern English Language

Early Modern English Language, Social Structure and Identity (EMESSI)

This study, developed in dialogue with the ERC-funded project Travel, Transculturality and Identity in England 1550-1700 (TIDE), aims at providing new insights on issues of identity and belonging in Early Modern England through language.

EMESSI offers a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative investigations of the semantic and socio-pragmatic profiles of (a selection of) the TIDE keywords surrounding three main social categories: an in-group (e.g., citizens, settlers), an out-group (e.g. foreigners, strangers, aliens) and an in-between group of ‘movers’ (e.g. travellers, vagrants).
