The difference you make: voices from our students

Student Fund the difference you make

Every University of Liverpool graduate knows the pride of walking across the stage, celebrating years of hard work and unforgettable memories. For many talented students today, that dream is at risk. Rising costs of food, rent, travel and essential study materials mean students face impossible choices: taking on multiple jobs, cutting back on opportunities, or even leaving university altogether.

The Student Fund helps ensure no student is held back simply because of financial circumstances, providing bursaries, scholarships and hardship support that enable students not only to come to Liverpool, but to thrive and make the most of their university experience. Your generosity supports students like Rebekah, Joel, Cerys and Maisie and many more whose journeys are only possible because of you. Their stories show the life-changing difference your support makes.

Maisie, second year medicine student:

For medicine student Maisie, the Liverpool Bursary has been transformative.

“Without the bursary and rent reduction, I would have been left with just £27 a week to live on. I wouldn’t have been able to afford the bus to football, which would mean losing a large part of my social interaction. Exploring the city would be completely gone, and I would never be able to get a gym membership, which is hugely important for my mental health. I would have had to work much more to cover my living costs, which would make my content-heavy degree even harder. I cannot put into words just how huge an impact the Liverpool Bursary has had on my life. Without the bursary, covering my living costs would place even more strain on me and my parents.”

Thanks to donors’ support, Maisie can pursue her dream of becoming a doctor while making the most of her university experience.

Rebekah, first-year medicinal chemistry student:

For Rebekah, the Liverpool Bursary has lifted the weight of financial stress:

“Because I’m not constantly worried about money, I’ve been able to get involved in societies – I sing in the Band Society, and I volunteer with the Legal Society’s Speed Negotiations competition. I also work as a Student Advocate, leading campus tours and supporting outreach events for younger students. I love it, especially the chance to help people who might not see university as an option.”

With this support, Rebekah has been able to commute to campus, join societies and take part in outreach work.

Joel, second year business management student:

Balancing ADHD, family responsibilities and financial challenges hasn’t been easy for Joel. But thanks to his bursary, hardship support, and the Widening Participation team, Joel has been able to focus on his studies and embrace new opportunities

“The Hardship Fund award meant I didn’t have to choose between rent and food at a really low point. The support I’ve received has completely lifted a weight off my shoulders. The bursary allowed me to cover essentials and get involved in society events without constantly worrying about money. Having this backing allowed me to stay focused on my studies, my wellbeing and truly make the most out of university life.”

Cerys, first-year sociology student:

For Cerys, who comes from a single-parent family, the Liverpool Scholars Bursary made university possible

“I was scared that I wouldn’t have access to the same opportunities as others. But receiving the bursary has allowed me to get involved in student life. I feel less stressed when thinking about my finances. As a disabled student, you may encounter additional costs involved in your studies. The bursary allowed me to put money towards a laptop that I needed for my studies. I was also able to secure some work experience in London and afford the travel there, and I have taken part in extracurricular activities.”

Rebekah, Joel, Cerys and Maisie - along with many more students - are only able to experience Liverpool thanks to your support. They are just four of the many whose journeys have been transformed by your generosity.

With your help, more students can overcome financial hardship, access life-changing opportunities, and make the most of their time in Liverpool.
