Every student’s journey is different, but what so many have in common is the life-changing impact of donor support. Thanks to our supporter community, students like Joel can access university through scholarships and bursaries and make the most of their time here. Support often begins long before a student arrives on campus and continues throughout their studies with us – helping to remove barriers, ease financial pressures and create a space where students can thrive. In this article, Joel talks about the support he’s received as a student
Liverpool experience
My time at Liverpool has been challenging but really rewarding. Balancing ADHD, family responsibilities, and finances hasn’t been easy, yet the support here has helped me stay on track. I’ve grown more confident, found a community and discovered how much I enjoy mentoring other widening participation students.
From the very start of my time at Liverpool, the University’s Widening Participation and Outreach team made me feel genuinely supported rather than just a student number.
A highlight so far has been working as a Liverpool Advocate alongside a wonderful team of students and supportive staff - this has really positively shaped my experience at university. Being accepted onto the fully funded week-long summer abroad programme at the University of Georgia in 2023 was another highlight for me. Each highlight reminded me I belong here and can achieve more than I first thought.
University support
I’ve received the full Liverpool Bursary and exam adjustments for my ADHD, plus a one-off £200 laptop grant, which enabled me to access my DSA-issued support.
In my second year, I applied to the Hardship Fund when my finances were really stretched and received £500 to pay towards my rent, plus Tesco gift cards to spend on essentials during this tough time, for which I was incredibly grateful.
Throughout it all, Ben Toleman from the Widening Participation and Outreach team has also been a huge support, guiding my transition from sixth form into university and always someone I can rely on for guidance, support or help.
Because I’m not stressed about money, I’ve been able to focus on my studies, bond with people and really enjoy my time here. It’s amazing how something like this can make you feel so much more at ease and allow you to take advantage of the different opportunities around you. I feel like I can say ‘yes’ to things without second-guessing whether or not it’s financially doable. It gives me the confidence to take up these chances. As a student living away from home, the extra income from the bursary is vital for making sure I can both cover my day-to-day expenses and enjoy the full university experience.
The support I’ve received has completely lifted a weight off my shoulders. The bursary allowed me to cover essentials and get involved in society events without constantly worrying about money. The Hardship Fund award meant I didn’t have to choose between rent and food at a really low point. Having this backing allowed me to stay focused on my studies, my wellbeing and truly make the most out of university life.
I’m really grateful for everything the Liverpool Bursary has allowed me to do. It’s not just about finances; it’s also about the sense of belonging and the memories I’m making here.
A message of thanks
Thank you for believing in students like me. Your generosity has given me the stability and freedom needed to focus on my studies and engage fully in campus life. Because of your support, I can pursue my ambitions without constant financial worry, and I plan to pay this kindness forward one day.
Even small gifts can transform a student’s journey. Talent and potential are everywhere, but not everyone has equal means. Your support can be the difference between a student dropping out and a student graduating ready to contribute to society. Scholarships and bursaries bridge that gap, allowing us to focus on learning, grow in confidence and ultimately pay that generosity forward.
